The Sgrafitto Collection is a modern twist on an ancient technique.
The word Sgraffito comes from the Italian graffiare, meaning “to scratch” and it is one of the most expressive decorative techniques in ceramics. It has a wonderful directness to it. The design is literally drawn or scratched into the clay itself.
The technique also has a long and global history, it appears in ancient Greek pottery, medieval European earthenware, East Asian ceramics, and Pre-Columbian American pottery, which gives it a kind of timeless, elemental feeling.

It makes a pattern you can both see and feel, which is part of what makes sgraffito so beautiful. The lines tend to have a quality unlike any painted decoration. They have crisp edges, slight ridges, and a slight three-dimensionality because material has been removed rather than added. When light rakes across the surface, it catches in the grooves and makes the design almost glow.
